George Edwin Bissell
George Edwin Bissell was a sculptor who operated a marble company in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. He studied art in Paris, Rome and Florence, and was also a Civil War veteran.
In New York, Bissell made the figure of Chester A. Arthur, the 21st president, in Madison Square; the monument to Abraham de Peyster now in Hanover Square in lower Manhattan; and the figure of John Watts in Trinity Churchyard, also in lower Manhattan.
Bissell was born Feb. 16, 1839, in New Preston, Conn. He died Aug. 30, 1920.
